 Language Arts Minimize

Language Arts is broken up into 3 areas.  The areas are Writer’s Workshop, Reader’s Workshop and Skills.

In the Writer’s Workshop students will be working on a variety of writing strategies, in addition to, producing a number of written pieces.  The students will practice writing in a variety of forms including persuasive, narrative and expository.  The students will also participate in the entire writing process including drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

In the Reader’s Workshop students will be introduced to a variety of genres.  Students will work on improving their reading skills and strategies as well as learning about various authors and literary styles through our author study units.  Students will also be required to expound upon their reading through Response to Literature.  This is a twist on the traditional book report where students will be allowed to align themselves with characters, give their opinions on books and generally respond with their own thoughts on what they have read.

Our skills program includes spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.  These subjects will be taught in isolation as well as interwoven through out the Language Arts program.  Students will be introduced to higher level concepts of word study such as suffixes, prefixes, root words, idioms and analogies.  Students will be expected to identify as well as use new words and concepts in both their reading and writing.
