 Homework Policy for 2007 - 2008 Minimize

The students of room R4 are expected to turn in all homework assignments.  Assignments will be given on Mondays through Thursdays.  The only homework students are expected to complete on the weekend is to read something that interests them.  This may include but is not limited to books, magazines, comics, etc.

The students are required to copy down their homework each night from the homework board.  They are to have their parents sign their planners when the homework assignment is completed.

Each child will be expected to turn in all homework assignments.  I understand that there will be times when your child doesn’t understand an assignment or they will have a conflict and not be able to complete the assignment.  Should this occur please just attach a note or send me an email.  I will work with them on the assignment and/or allow additional time to complete it.

In an attempt to motivate the students and reward those who complete the assigned homework, each Friday afternoon the students will be allowed to have 25 minutes of free time.  This is a time where they can visit, play games, read, write, etc.  For the students who have not completed their homework, and do not have a note, they will have to write their name in the “Consequence Notebook” and will lose 5 minutes of free time for each assignment missing.

The homework assignments generally will be as follows:

v    Mathematics, any unfinished work from the day, and as needed a study link worksheet page.

v    Skills, the students will be expected to complete any spelling, vocabulary or grammar work that they don’t get done in class.  Also, every Friday there will be spelling and vocabulary quizzes.  The students are expected to be studying all week for these quizzes.

v    Reading, the students are encouraged to read every evening, and during some part of the weekend.  I will be sending home a booklet of “At Home Reading Charts” so that they may catalog their reading in 10 minute increments.

v    Writing, the students will be required to free write at least ¾ of a page in their writer’s notebooks.  As the year progresses they will be expected to complete specific drafting, revising, editing and publishing assignments.

v    Social Studies, the students will receive assignments as needed.

v    Science, the students will receive assignments as needed.

** Please note:  I generally do not give additional assignments for homework.  We cover many assignments during the day, therefore the majority of homework that a child brings home will be what he or she hasn’t completed in class.
