Welcome! Second grade is a time for personal growth and moving towards independence. This year your child will work towards building long-lasting friendships, becoming role models, and learning the importance of responsibility. Throughout the year your child will work independently, with partners, and in small groups to enhance their learning potential.
The 2nd grade class has a very exciting year ahead of them. We will begin the year by working together to build a community. As we do this, I will stress how classrooms are communities and how important it is that everyone works together. Your child will also learn about the wonderful world of plants, dinosaurs, weather, and lights and shadows. Throughout the year, your child will conduct experiments, problem solve, become meteorologists, and take on several more adventures.
You can expect to find homework assignments, spelling lists, upcoming events, and student work on this class website.

I look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday night at Back to School Night! Check the Carl Sandburg homepage for times.
A week in a glance:
Our focus for the next few weeks will be on learning the routines and following expectations.
Next week, we will finish up our unit on communities and begin digging up facts about plants!. This unit has always been an exciting one for the students because our room is transformed into a mini garden! We also take a nature walk to the pond and visit the Carson Nature Center.
The students have been working hard at adding detail to their sentences. Next week, we will begin writing auto-biographies. I will expect your child to complete a time line of their life by Thursday, Sept. 2. I will provide the paper.
If your child is in my math class, they will be coming home with a math journal that will hold all of the math links. This binder will need to go home every night and be brought back every day. A letter explaining the purpose of the binder will go home on Monday.
If you did not give me your email address please email me at ktruman@lps.k12.us.co. At times, I may need to send a mass email for field trip purposes or volunteer opportunities.
On Going:
Please encourage your child to write at home, whether it be a personal narrative, a story, a poem, or a non fiction piece.
This week's writing assignment: Complete a time line.
Please encourage your child to do their best work. Not only am I looking to see if the assignment is complete, but that it is quality work.
Don't forget to send your child to school with a snack!
MATH
Here, you will find the weekly assignments for math.
There will be no homework on Fridays. Your child does not need to take the homelinks out of their binder. The purpose of the binder is to keep all of the assignments in one place.
For some reason, the second grade math curriculum doesn’t provide homelinks for the first unit. Therefore, your child’s binder begins with unit 2. Until we get to unit 2, I will provide supplemental homework that needs to be completed at home and returned the next day.
