Rose Woods, Sandburg Elementary teacher, has been inducted into the Colorado Academy of Educators for the Gifted, Talented and Creative. This organization “exists for the purpose of recognizing, stimulating, strengthening, and nurturing professional excellence in the delivery of educational services to the vast population of gifted, talented, and creative children and youth in Colorado.”

 Too much recess Minimize

You may never hear your child complain "we had too much recess time today." But you might hear that we've changed the order of recess and lunch. We noticed that many students rushed through lunch so they could get outside for recess. Now students start outside and are called in for what we hope is a more civilized lunch.

 
  
 Weather Gear Minimize

Remember those coats, gloves, hats, and boots!  Recesses are an important part of every day at school.  If the temperature is above 20 degrees and not raining, snowing, or lightning, we're out getting fresh air into our lungs and giving our hearts and muscles a workout.

 Author Visit Minimize

Mark Ludy visited Sandburg on Thursday, February 28 for the day. It was a wonderful day. The children enjoyed meeting Mr. Ludy as he shared his ideas about the writing process.  DI Competition Minimize
Did you know?  There are 2 Destination Imagination teams at Sandburg and they would like to cordially invite you to their competition on Saturday, March 15, 2008!  The competition is at Douglas County High School, 2842 Front St.,  Castle Rock, CO 80104
 
The Rising Stars team, consisting of Josie R., Anna W., Anna B., Mary B., Henry F., Xander C., and Owen C. will be presenting their solution for the Rising Stars challenge at 9:15 SHARP in the North Building Room 30 and 31.  Please be advised that their performance will only be a maximum of 8 minutes, and they will start precisely on time.  In previous years, the doors to the room have been locked once performing has commenced.  Here is a summary of their challenge:
 
Your Challenge is to choose something that happened in the past and change it. You will make up a Play that will tell the story of how your team changed history. Your story will have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You will have characters in your Play, and you will also make up a song. You will make a Magical Prop that is made up of different shapes. The Magical Prop will help you change history.
 
The Mountain Monkeys team, consisting of Aidan C., Briana M., Dylan K., Kathleen B., Kyle K., and Seneca H. will be presenting their solution to the Obstacles, of Course challenge at 9:40 SHARP in the South Building Gym.  Please be advised that their performance will only be a maximum of 8 minutes, and they will start precisely on time.  In previous years, the doors to the room have been locked once performing has commenced.  Here is a summary of their challenge:
Young or old, big or small, we all face obstacles in everyday life. Things are always getting in our way! Overcoming these obstacles, and how we do it, helps all of us grow and reach our goals. To solve this Challenge, your team’s vehicle will need to go over, under, around and through obstacles that it encounters on its path. Calculate carefully: your final score will depend on the choices your team makes – to overcome obstacles, of course! It’s all up to YOU!
Points of Interest! Your team will:
  • Design and construct an Obstacle Course, with from three to ten different Obstacles.
  • Design and construct a Vehicle that will travel the Obstacle Course. The Vehicle will score points for the number of Obstacles successfully overcome.
  • Create an original, non-verbal Story about overcoming Obstacle(s). The appearance of the Obstacle Course should be linked to the Story’s theme.
  • Create two Side Trips and integrate them into the Presentation.

 Science Fair Minimize

By the looks of the projects at the Science Fair it appears as though we have some budding scientists here at Sandburg Elementary. 

The 2008 Science Fair was our biggest yet. Organizer Sue Clark worked tirelessly to make sure we could accommodate the 149 projects submitted by our Kindergarten through 5th grade students. All three kivas as well as three classrooms were full of amazing science. 
 
The experiments ranged from the practical to the very scientific. Students observed things such as: what microwave popcorn brand pops the best, which chemicals weigh the heaviest, how high-altitude effects baking, vitamin E and its effect on staying young, which color Christmas light lasts the longest, and what is the best way to melt ice without heat. 
 
One parent voiced, “The overall concept was intimidating because of the competition,” and she wondered if the projects had to be sophisticated to be taken seriously. She was pleasantly surprised by the practical nature of the projects and thought is was a good learning experience. 
 
Although the projects in the fair are not judged we hope the choice encourages the students to participate and get excited about science.  
 
The students were enthusiastic about creating a project outside of their regular science curriculum. “I think the Science Fair is a great opportunity for kids. It was very exciting to see those people coming to see my experiment,” fifth grader Emily S. said. Jake W. shared, “The science fair was hard work and a little overdone, but when you see your project completed and you see how well it worked it was kind of worth it.”
 
  
 Kindergarten & Preschool Information Night Minimize

There will be an information night for the incoming Kindergarten and Preschool parents on Tuesday January 29th at 6:30 p.m. This is a very informative meeting where parents can meet the teachers, learn about the programs offered at Sandburg, and hear what a day looks like as a kindergartner or a preschooler.

 
  
 Kindergarten Registration Minimize

Registration for the 2008-2009 school year will take place Monday and Tuesday, February 4th and 5th from 9: a.m. to 3:45 p.m. both days and in the evening on Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. Please bring along proof of residence, which is a copy of your lease or a copy of your deed, your child’s immunization records from the doctor, and your child’s birth certificate to register your child for kindergarten.

 
  
 Preschool Registration Minimize

            Though we are just ending our first semester of school, our program is getting ready for registration for the 2008-09 school year.  Our teachers are degreed and provide an educationally based program focusing on a smooth transition from home to school and kindergarten readiness, while enabling children and parents to feel a close connection to our school community.  Please feel free to stop by anytime to visit our classroom to see what makes our preschool the best choice for your child.

            For 2008-09, we have the following Preschool offerings to choose from:
Mornings: half-day; 2 or 4 days a week; 3-5 year olds
Afternoons: half-day; 4 days a week; 4-5 year olds
Full Day:  5 days a week; 3-5 year olds

            We will have a Parent Information Night on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:30 p.m.  Please come to find out specifics about what each of these classes offer for you and your children.

            Registration for NEW families will take place on Monday and Tuesday, February 4th and 5th beginning at 9:00am in conjunction with Kindergarten registration.  Registration for returning families begins Jan. 28th.  If you have had a child in the program in the past, please come by the Preschool classroom to pick up a registration form between Jan. 28th and Feb. 1st to register by Feb. 1st.  At the time of registration you will need to fill out the registration form and write a check for the non-refundable registration fee of $55 for one child in the family and $75 for 2 or more in the family.

 Imagination Makers Assembly Minimize

On December 3rd, our students had the opportunity to see a play by the Imagination Makers Theater Company. The performance at our school was made possible by a grant from the Arapahoe County Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) and the Trask Family Foundation.

 
  
 District Art Show Minimize

The elementary district art show is going on at the Bemis Library 6014 S.Datura St. 303-795-3961 from January 9 to January 22.  The reception is January 22, 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.
