Welcome to Ms. Dallapiazza's Classroom
 Dear Parents,

If you have not seen the sight words for this week they are:  made, my, now, over, people.  We are still working on the long a sound using ai and ay.  We are trying to remember that ai likes to be in the middle of words and ay likes to be at the end.

My math class will have  the unit 5 math test tomorrow.  If we have time we will do lesson one from unit 6 and I will send home the unit 6 math packet.  If we do not have time to begin unit 6 after the test the packet will come home on Friday.

We have been learing about paragraph writing by writing about topics we have strong opinions on.  We are going to begin writing book reviews this week.  I am certain all the kids can name some favorite books or authors.  You might want to ask them to tell you about some of their favorites and give you some reasons why they enjoy the books.

We are working very hard on giving retells after reading.  Please have them give you retells after reading at home.   They should read for about 15 minutes.  If the books are longer they do not need to read the entire book in one day.

When giving a retell of a narrative your child should include the following elements
  •  names of charaters and places
  •  retell the events in order using language from the text
  •  tell how the book ended.
  •  make a connection to the text
  •  identify the most important of one of the most important events in the book

When retelling expository text your child should include the following elements:

  • make precidtions about the text
  • identify the main idea
  • be able to identify most important facts or ideas
  • reflect on what they feel is the most important things they learned from the book and tell why it is important
  •

Friday mornings are still great opportunities for coming in and listening to readers and hearing their retells.  You do not need to make a commitment to come every week, you can show up any Friday around 9:40.

If you are looking for a fun game try Bananagrams.  My family discovered it over winter break and we are loving it (well, at least I am because I can actually win this game).

Thanks,

The best way to communicate with me is by e-mail. If you did not get me your e-mail yet, please send me an e-mail so I have your address to sdallapiazza@lps.k12.co.us

Another way to communicate is through notes in the reading log. I check these every day, so feel free to put any notes in the log.

I would prefer to send most letters home via e-mail. If this does not work for you please let me know and I will send home paper copies inside Friday folders or book bags. I will also do my best to put a copy of the letters I send home on the website.

If you would like to meet with me please schedule an appointment for before or after school.

Please check the Friday folder each week for examples of student work. It should give you a good idea of what we are working on in class. This should also give you an idea of how your child is progressing in academic areas. We will meet the week of October 10-14 for parent teacher conferences. If you would like to meet with me before that time please let me know.

Thank you,
